A Personal Guide

Where city life meets the wild landscapes of Central Asia.

Kazakhstan surprised me with its scale. One moment I was walking beneath leafy trees and elegant Soviet-era buildings in Almaty; the next, I was standing beside a canyon that looked carved by another planet.

For a first trip, I recommend using Almaty as your base. It is the natural starting point for Charyn Canyon, Kolsay Lakes and Kaindy Lake, and it gives the journey a beautiful rhythm between culture, food and nature.

Why Kazakhstan

A journey made for long roads and slow looking.

The best memories here often happen between destinations: a roadside tea stop, a changing sky over the steppe, or the first glimpse of blue water through the pine trees.

“Leave space in your itinerary for the quiet that arrives when the city disappears behind you.”

Plan by Season

Best Time to Visit Kazakhstan

For this route, late May to June and September to early October offer the best balance of weather, color and comfortable travel.

01

Spring

Almaty becomes green and pleasant, but higher mountain areas may still have snow, mud or limited access.

03

Autumn

Softer light, fewer crowds and golden foliage make September especially rewarding for photographers.

04

Winter

Best for Almaty’s cafés, museums and nearby snow sports, with more weather-dependent nature trips.

Where to Stay

Three useful bases

01

Central Almaty

Stay in the Almaly district or Golden Square area for cafés, parks, museums and an easy first visit.

The practical base for Kolsay and Kaindy, with simple guesthouses and home-cooked meals.

03

Near Charyn

A useful option for sunrise, sunset and a quieter canyon experience, although choices are limited.

Getting Around

Transportation

Getting to Almaty

Almaty International Airport is the main gateway for this route. Save your accommodation address in English and Russian or Kazakh.

Inside the city

Central Almaty is pleasant on foot. The metro and ride-hailing are useful, but allow extra time during busy traffic periods.

Charyn, Kolsay and Kaindy

Choose a small-group tour, private driver or rental car. The final approach to Kaindy is rough and best handled by a local 4WD.

Angela’s tip

Download offline maps and leave breathing room for mountain weather, road conditions and photography stops.
